Everything You Should Know About the PE Civil Structural Exam

Here are a few things you might want to know if you are interested in becoming a professional civil engineer. For most individuals, in order to obtain your PE license, you will need to earn a four-year engineering degree, pass the FE Civil exam, obtain four years of engineering experience, and then take and pass the PE Civil Structural exam. Our Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Civil Structural exam review course will help build your confidence for exam day. This exam is the last step in your goal to earning your professional engineering license.

Before Taking the Exam

Before you can take the PE Civil Structural exam, you will need to meet several requirements specified by NCEES. To sit for the exam, you will need:

  • A four-year degree from an accredited university or program
  • A passing result on the FE Civil exam
  • 4 years of engineering experience
  • A background check
  • A detailed work experience report

Because state requirements all vary, we suggest checking with your state board to make sure you are following the right guidelines.

PE Civil Structural Exam Fees

A fee of $375 will be due to NCEES before you can sit for the PE Civil Structural exam. Because every state may have different registration procedures, we suggest you check with your state licensing board in case there are separate applications or fees required to register.

Exam Specifications

The PE Civil Structural exam was created to help gauge an individual’s competence within civil engineering. This exam is 9 hours long, consists of 80 questions, is computer-based, and administered by NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers year-round. Using the International System of units (SI) and the US Customary System (USCS), this exam is made up of both multiple-choice questions and alternative item types (AITs). The exam day schedule is as follows:

  • Nondisclosure agreement (2 minutes)
  • Tutorial (8 minutes)
  • Exam (8 hours)
  • Scheduled break (50 minutes)

Materials and Resources

On the day of the exam, students will be given a virtual version of the NCEES PE Civil Reference Handbook. A free copy of this handbook is available for download through the student’s MyNCEES account. They can also download the free NCEES Examinee Guide to learn more about what to expect on the day of the PE Civil Structural exam.

After the Exam

After taking a computer-based exam, results will typically be available 7-10 days later. NCEES will send an email to each candidate with instructions on how to see results through their MyNCEES account. More information about how NCEES scores exams can be found here.
