Check out some testimonials from past students:

  • "I had tried review manuals and the PPI review course in preparation of the FE Civil exam but failed it twice. For my third test attempt, I had come across the School of PE. I took the School of PE's On-Demand course for four months, and finally passed the exam!!!"

Everything You Should Know About the FE Other (General) Exam

Once you have a four-year degree from an engineering program, you can take your engineering career to the next level by passing the FE exam. Our Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Other (General) exam review course will help you do this by preparing you for the FE Other (General) exam. Passing the FE exam earns the examinee an engineer-in-training (EIT) certificate, and this certification can result in more opportunities and better pay. Aspiring engineers with an EIT and four years of hands-on experience can then advance their careers by earning a PE license.

Before Taking the Exam

The primary way students qualify to sit for the FE Other (General) exam is by fulfilling or being in the final years of their state’s education requirement, completing either an EAC/ABET engineering program or an ETAC/ABET engineering technology program. You may also be required by your state board to submit an application and pay a fee in order to qualify. Students who have not completed an EAC, ETAC, or ABET-accredited engineering program may still be able to qualify by submitting an application and paying a fee. These application and fee requirements vary depending on the state board; you can find your state board on the NCEES website for more information on your state’s specific requirements.

FE Other (General) Exam Fees

Candidates must pay NCEES $175 to sit for the FE Other (General) exam. Some state boards require a separate fee. You can find out more about your state’s registration procedures on the NCEES website.

FE Other (General) Exam Specifications

NCEES has set up the FE Other (General) exam to test how competent the examinees are in general engineering. This exam is administered throughout the year at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers and is presented as a computer-based exam. Some of the questions are multiple choice and some are alternative item types (AITs) designed to test for technical knowledge. For both, examinees will use the International System of Units and the US Customary System (USCS). The exam has 110 questions and a total appointment time of 6 hours—this includes:

  • Nondisclosure agreement (2 minutes)
  • Tutorial (8 minutes)
  • Scheduled breaks (25 minutes)
  • Exam (5 hours and 20 minutes)

Materials and Resources

Examinees are only permitted to use the FE Other (General) Reference Handbook during the exam. This handbook can be downloaded for free through a MyNCEES account. You can also gain a better understanding of what to expect during the exam by checking out the NCEES Examinee Guide.

After the Exam

Examinees can typically expect their results 7-10 days after the exam. Once the results are available, NCEES will send instructions via email to inform you on how to use your MyNCEES account to view them. Check out the NCEES website to learn more about how the FE Other (General) exam is scored.
