AR Features In Our Book
These features enhance the learning experience and memory recognition.
Readers need a mobile device (iOS or Android)—a phone or tablet—to view the AR content. In addition, they must install the free TotalAR app. (Instructions for downloading the app are available in the book.)
Using this app, readers can scan predefined images and special codes while reading the book to perform different types of activities:
- Flash Cards – Each chapter contains a flash cards target. When the target is scanned, readers will be able to view flash cards associated with that chapter in order to learn terminology and prepare better for the exam.
- Quizzes – A quiz target also appears in each chapter. When that target is scanned, readers can take a quiz associated with that chapter to test their knowledge of the material.
- Errata List – When a predefined target is scanned, readers can see the latest errata list.
When you purchase the book, you will have one year of complimentary access to the above AR features. However, there is also premium paid AR content listed below, which is available via monthly subscription at an additional cost:
- Video Lectures – Each chapter contains a video lecture, available through monthly subscriptions. When a target is scanned, readers can view videos where a subject matter expert (SME) explains the chapter content. This should help readers understand the content quicker.

Everything You Should Know About the FE Exam
The FE exam was created to help gauge an individual’s competence within their chosen field of engineering and is generally the first step towards a career in engineering. Passing the FE exam will grant you an engineer-in-training certificate (EIT), which is required to continue the path to your PE exam. After passing the FE exam, earning your EIT, and gaining four years of experience in engineering, you can take your career to the next level by passing the PE exam.
Prerequisites
Before you are allowed to take the FE exam, you will need to meet several requirements specified by NCEES. Because states’ requirements all vary, we suggest checking with your state board. A lot of states will have similar suggestions for someone seeking professional licensure—make sure you partner with a leading exam prep provider like School of PE to boost your chances of success.
Exam Fees
A fee of $175 will be due to NCEES before you can sit for the FE exam. Because every state may have different registration procedures, we suggest you check with your state’s licensing board in case there are separate applications or fees required to register.
Exam Day
FE exams include 110 questions, are 6 hours long, and are made up of both multiple-choice questions and alternative item types (AITs). On the day of the exam, you will be given a virtual version of the NCEES FE Reference Handbook. You will also have access to a digital calculator and onscreen whiteboard. A free copy of this handbook is available for download through your MyNCEES account. You can also download the free NCEES Examinee Guide to learn more about what to expect on the day of the FE exam.
After the Exam
CBT exam results are typically available 7 to 10 days after you take the FE exam. NCEES will send you an email with instructions on how to view and understand your exam review results through your NCEES account. If you are curious to learn more about this process, please click here.

Easy-To-Use Live Online and Ondemand Streaming with No Software Downloads
Overview
Our Live Online and Ondemand courses use advanced communication technology. Live Online classes are taught by our instructors through a live webcast (virtual classroom). This simple web interface requires no software downloads. Interaction with instructors is done via a chat interface during the lecture. You can attend these virtual classes from anywhere if you have access to a computer with internet. Ondemand courses use these recorded sessions to make courses available to stream at your convenience.
